What is the Red Cell?
The Red Cell is a specialized sub-team within Fight Club International, designed for members passionate about studying, representing, and critiquing adversary strategies in wargaming scenarios. It’s a collaborative space where we dive deep into adversarial thinking, tactics, and doctrines to enhance realism and challenge in wargaming activities.
By joining the Red Cell, you'll contribute to building more robust Red Force (RedFor) strategies, critique Blue Force (BlueFor) assumptions, and play a pivotal role in crafting realistic adversarial roles in games and simulations. Whether you're a seasoned wargamer, a military strategist, or simply someone with a keen interest in adversarial studies, this is your chance to join a like-minded community and elevate your skills.
EXAMPLE USE CASES:
SCENARIO DESIGN: The Red Cell assists in designing a wargame focused on a near-peer conflict. They develop a realistic adversary doctrine based on open-source research, including operational objectives, strategies, and tactics for a hypothetical adversary. The game achieves higher realism by presenting a credible and challenging Red Force, forcing Blue players to innovate and adapt.
ADVERSARY COURSE OF ACTION GENERATION: During a wargame, the Red Cell generates multiple adversary CoAs to reflect diverse and plausible responses to Blue actions, ranging from conventional military tactics to hybrid warfare approaches like cyberattacks or economic disruption. Blue players face a variety of realistic scenarios, enhancing their decision-making under pressure and forcing them to consider second- and third-order effects.
CRITIQUE OF BLUE ASSUMPTIONS: Blue Force planners assume the adversary lacks the capability to execute combined cyber and kinetic operations. The Red Cell, drawing on adversary doctrine and past behavior, critiques this assumption and introduces scenarios where such operations occur. Blue planners identify gaps in their understanding of adversary capabilities and refine their strategies accordingly.
REDFOR REPRESENATION DURING GAMEPLAY: During a wargame, Red Cell members act as adversary commanders, making real-time decisions based on adversarial doctrine. They launch unexpected attacks, exploit weaknesses, and adapt to Blue’s tactics/strategies. Blue players are forced to think on their feet, contend with a realistic and dynamic adversary, and refine their operational agility.
CHALLENGING WARGAME DESIGNERS: The Red Cell evaluates a wargame scenario, pointing out where the adversary's behavior or capabilities are unrealistic or underdeveloped. They provide suggestions for making the adversary's role more dynamic and challenging. The wargame achieves greater credibility and educational value for participants.
AFTER ACTION REVIEW: After a wargame, the Red Cell provides a detailed critique of how Blue interpreted and countered Red’s strategies, highlighting where Blue underestimated or misjudged the adversary. Blue players gain actionable feedback that enhances their understanding of adversarial dynamics and improves future performance.
Why Do We Need a Red Cell?
It's Not Just About Playing Red—It's About Thinking Red.
In wargaming, realism matters. While Blue players can take on the role of Red Forces during a game, they often approach it through the lens of their own doctrine, biases, and assumptions. This limits the authenticity and creativity of the adversary's actions, reducing the challenge and learning potential for the exercise.
The Red Cell is here to solve that problem.
The Value of a Dedicated Red Cell
-
Authenticity: Members of the Red Cell specialize in adversarial thinking. They study the doctrines, tactics, and strategies of real-world adversaries, ensuring Red Forces act in ways that are authentic, unpredictable, and reflective of the actual threats Blue may face.
-
Asymmetric Thinking: Unlike Blue players who may default to familiar tactics, the Red Cell operates outside conventional thinking, creating courses of action (CoAs) that leverage unconventional or asymmetric approaches. This challenges Blue players to think critically and adapt to more realistic scenario.
-
Neutrality: Dedicated Red Cell members focus solely on their adversarial role without the inherent bias of wanting Blue to succeed. This neutrality ensures a more balanced and challenging wargame experience.
-
Consistency: Having a dedicated Red Cell ensures continuity and depth in the representation of adversaries across multiple games and scenarios. This builds a body of knowledge and expertise that elevates the overall quality of wargaming.
-
Critique and Improvement: Beyond gameplay, the Red Cell critiques Blue’s assessment of adversarial strategies, identifying blind spots and areas for improvement. This feedback loop is essential for refining wargaming outcomes and learning objectives.
The Red Cell Advantage
By forming a specialized team of adversarial thinkers, we create a richer, more immersive wargaming experience. Red Cell members bring expertise, creativity, and authenticity to the table, challenging Blue players in ways that mirror the complexity of real-world conflicts.
